ROLE MODEL #01

Jessica Walsh is a multidisciplinary designer living and working in NYC. Her work has been featured in numerous magazines and books, and won design awards from the Type Directors Club, Art Directors Club, SPD, Print, Graphis, among others. She has been named Computer Arts magazines “Top Rising Star in Design”, an Art Directors Club “Young Gun”, and Print Magazines “New Visual Artist” and L magazines “25 under 25 Envy List”. She has worked with studios such as Sagmeister Inc, Pentagram Design and Print Magazine, and freelances for a variety of clients such as the The New York Times, AIGA, Computer Arts & I.D. Magazine, and Technology Review.
When not doing design, she can be found playing with her dog Olive, eating avocados, or doing yoga.”

Okay, not only does she sound like my new best friend she is also a big inspiration and role model for me as a young, female designer. She is successful, but you can tell that she still has fun with her work and continues to endeavour upon projects that explore and push boundaries.

INSTA INSPO #03

I think I need to stop spending time on Instagram… I get frustrated when there isn’t enough activity for my liking.

01/ The Aboard Dude – fun, witty and pretty chalkboard/menu board designs.

02/ Milk Thistles –  flowers, colour, girliness… because sometimes you just need that sort of thing, ya know?

03/ Seb Lester – wonderful lettering and calligraphy with nice little video snippets here and there.

04/ FrenchieButt – I love dogs and miss my own so I get a huge big smile when this cute one pops up on Instagram.

MOODBOARD #01

When Kris (the boyfriend) and I were in Chiang Mai, Thailand we stumbled across a quaint pizza restaurant called Street Pizza. We loved it and would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is traveling through the north of Thailand.

Once we finished our pizza the owner introduced himself and we started chatting. One thing lead to another and soon enough Kris and I were offering to make him a website to put his business on the map.

Here is a quick inspirational moodboard for the project to come.

CONCEPT #01

Move Your Body

“Department of Health are trying to encourage the public to take part in more physical activity. The average person spends up to 8 hours on technology a day. The campaign is spread across a range of different platforms to encourage people to do as much exercise as their hands. Give your hands a break and start moving your body.”

Love the concept of this and it is also well executed.

THE PD&C LAUNCH

Last Thursday we had our official launch event for Pitch Dating & Creating and, if I do say so myself, it went off with a bang.
With many Melbourne creatives in attendance we launched the website with the very first brief, conducted a design competition in collaboration with Karton and enjoyed tasty food and drinks.

Can’t wait to see where this side project goes!

IKEA OR DEATH

IKEA is that friendly shop where you get cheap furniture from the inside of a giant, unending warehouse. Black metal is the kind of music that sounds like someone screaming while trapped inside a burning church. They each possess a fervent fan base. And to tell you the truth, the names of the furniture in IKEA sound a lot like the names of black metal bands. Consider this quiz an educational way to learn the difference between the two. It doesn’t matter if you know who Burzum is or if you’ve ever sat in a Preben chair – it’s time to have some kvlt fun. Death to false furniture!”

Spent a little too long on this…

PITCH DATING & CREATING

I recently started Pitch Dating & Creating which is an online platform that is all about allowing emerging graphic designers to connect, collaborate and create. It gives young designers the opportunity to maintain that creative momentum of university and transition competitively into the industry. We aim to give young designers exposure, help build and differentiate their graduate portfolio’s while joining a community through ‘dating & creating’ with up and coming creatives from Australia and around the world.

Paired together, each ‘date’ is given a creative brief, a deadline and the encouragement to be as imaginative and innovative as they like. Both individual responses are uploaded, side-by-side, to the website weekly and will then be open for evaluation from the public and design community off a predetermined set of criteria. The platform is aimed at enabling designer’s access to constructive feedback from people within the industry as well as from the general public who aren’t graphically trained.

Pitch Dating & Creating was conceptualised for the purpose of highlighting fresh, un-tapped talent and bringing young designers a program to exercise their creative skill-set in a real world scenario. It aims to soften the daunting task of starting out alone through access to a community of their peers, practice interpreting and responding to briefs in an accessible way and take their first steps to achieving their goals.

It would be great if you could head on over to our website, follow us on Instagram and like us on Facebook.
